165mm S-Grind Santoku, Copper Mesh Mokume Gane
This Santoku is a combination of a functional kitchen knife and a highly artistic approach to laminated steel. The blade was made in a Go-Mai construction, with a 52100 steel core, separated by a layer of nickel and copper/carbon-steel mokume gane on the sides.
The most important feature of this knife is the way the pattern was created. Unlike more traditional constructions, the copper was not used in the form of straight copper sheets. Instead, I used a copper mesh, which behaves in a much more unpredictable way during forging and forge-welding. As a result, the copper lines are not even or repetitive — in some areas they stretch into delicate, flowing layers, while in others they almost disappear, creating a beautifully organic and irregular pattern.
The final effect resembles natural geological layers, a topographic map, or a flowing landscape captured inside the steel. Every part of the blade has its own character, and the whole pattern is something that can never be recreated in exactly the same way.
The handle was made by Wroan Custom Knives from bog oak and beautifully hand-carved. Its sculpted form perfectly complements the raw, deep character of the blade, adding elegance and a very individual expression to the whole knife.
This is a knife for someone who is looking not only for a precise kitchen tool, but also for a truly unique object — handmade, built from a material with a one-of-a-kind layer structure, and carrying a clear mark of craftsmanship.
